Data Archive is a simulation of tape data storage systems currently in use in many data centres as “cold storage”–a means to cheaply and efficiently store massive quantities of data. This systems operates through robots that physically move the tapes to the drives as they are required. Here, the robots demonstrate the constant movement, energy and activity of what is normally thought of as a passive and permanent archive, an unceasing dance of machinery and electricity that is taking place inside industrial-scale energy-intensive facilities.
